Melanin is the protective pigment that gives skin colour and is produced by skin cells called melanocytes. When skin is exposed to the sun, melanocytes increase melanin productio and distribute it to neighbouring cells where it creates a natural protection against sun damage. A gradually acquired tan comes from the whole top skin layer (Epidermis). As new cells reproduce, the old cells are pushed towards the surface of the skin carrying the melanin with them. The more melanin there is in the skin, the deeper and longer-lasting the tan. |
